Synchronization of Multimedia Streams in Distributed Environments
نویسندگان
چکیده
One of the major features that distinguishes multimedia applications from other traditional applications is the integration of various media streams that have to be presented in a synchronized fashion. This paper presents a set of synchronization algorithms for continuous media streams in a distributed best-eeort system. First, we show how the load variation at the source may lead to an erroneous synchronization speciication, and how the display time aaects the the presentation of the frames. Second, we introduce an adap-tive lip-synchronization algorithm that is robust in the presence of network and CPU load variations, and extend it for the general case of n continuous streams that have the same or diierent sources. A direct application of our research is the Interactive Remote Instruction (IRI) project 1 , which requires synchronization algorithms in a distance learning environment where participants use best-eeort operating systems and networks.

Multimedia applications require the handling of synchronization between media streams. We present tools for creating, editing and presenting synchronized multimedia objects. Specifying synchronization is supported by the graphical Synchronization Editor and execution of multimedia presentations is performed by the Synchronizer. Major topics cover requirements resulting from underlying distribut...

متن کاملActivation Set: An abstraction for accessing periodic data streams
In distributed multimedia applications time-dependent data streams are conveyed and processed under real-time conditions. The timely accurate activation of the stream handlers processing the data units of streams requires deriving their scheduling times from the temporal properties of the data streams and the amount of data that is processed in each activation. In this paper, we propose the act...
متن کاملSynchronization of Multimedia Events based on Semantic Extraction -A Survey
This paper explores the various synchronization schemes of multimedia events and how they are synchronized. Mostly the synchronization is based on the ECA rules [Event, Condition and Action]. When multimedia streams are presented to the user it should be synchronized, even though it is in distributed system. A distributed multimedia system involved for ECA that should be synchronized while pres...
